Wrangling SCSWA Education and Outreach: Peter Ibarbo By Cassie McClure and Suzanne Michaels

It’s a strange time to start a new job in public outreach, when social distancing keeps us “distant”. But Peter Ibarbo, new Education & Outreach Coordinator for the South Central Solid Waste Authority (SCSWA), is optimistic and hit the ground running… even if the path doesn’t quite put him in front of his audience, yet.

“We will use every outreach resource available with social media, website updates and new targeted signage to connect with customers about solid waste issues throughout Doña Ana County, including sustaining and growing our recycling program,” said Ibarbo. “We also want a 2-way conversation with customers.” (You can reach him at pibarbo@las-cruces.org)

Ibarbo joins the SCSWA after 20 years of community outreach and public relations experience, most recently as public information officer of Sunland Park, New Mexico. Before that, Ibarbo spent a decade with New Mexico’s International Business Accelerator leading trade missions and counseling hundreds of small businesses about expanding markets in Mexico. He then worked more than 5 years as Deputy District Director with New Mexico’s 2nd U.S. Congressional District, addressing environmental issues (natural resources, soil, and water conservation) and assisting regional municipalities with community clean-up events and improving the region’s quality of life.

“I grew up in a farming and livestock environment; so, I’ve understood from a young age what it means to be a good steward of the land,” said Ibarbo. “In that environment you reuse everything as much as possible. Recycling moves us forward and creates a legacy for our lands and our communities to think about how we consume, what we throw
away, and how to stop illegal dumping.”

South Central Solid Waste Authority manages solid waste, recyclables, and works to stop illegal dumping for residents and businesses throughout Doña Ana County. Contact the SCSWA at 575-528-3800 or visit www.SCSWA.net.
